"Moderetter" by Dr. Beckmann make it possible: Caring for clothes and wearing them longer protects the environment

If we shop less and more valuable, and if we care for our clothes correctly and wear them longer, the environment is happy. We are helping to reduce the consumption of raw materials such as water and cotton. Instead of “Fast Fashion”, “Care & Repair” is the order of the day: wear, wash properly, patch, remove stains, swap and wear again.

The "moderetter" of Dr. Beckmann and Fleckenteufel, Odor Remover & Co. make it easy to use our textiles more sustainably.

“Fast fashion” has many of us firmly under control: We no longer buy clothes because we urgently need them, but because they are currently in fashion and dirt cheap. What we no longer like or are no longer trendy, we put in the used clothing collection. In the worst case, the parts will end up in the rubbish bag. The fact that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter and is responsible for 850 tons of CO2 annually with the manufacture and transport of clothing is unfortunately only too gladly ignored.

Various initiatives by Swiss people such as Walk-in-Closet, Repair Cafés or rental providers such as Peppermint Rent-a-Dress etc. show that there is another way. They tailor clothes from sustainably produced fabrics, sell them at fair prices, and mend holes and swap clothes at fairs or private parties or offer a large selection of clothes for rent. Old & new are cheekily combined. But what should we do if our clothes are stained or heavily yellowed?

Stains or smell of sweat? - Still no reason to dispose of a T-shirt

Even stubborn stains are no reason to just throw clothes away. Dr. Beckmann remove over 150 different types of stains. And that is gentle on fabrics and colors, even made from non-washable textiles such as blazers, suits or coats. Dr. Beckmann Super White. If you have a stubborn smell of sweat in your sportswear, it is best to use an odor remover: with its ingenious formula, it removes unpleasant odors from synthetics, sportswear and functional clothing, wool and even silk and ensures that freshly washed clothes take on new and bad smells less quickly.

Less washes are good for the environment

The Dr. Beckmann color & dirt collection cloths: They protect colored, light or white striped textiles from discoloration and ensure that the colors remain beautiful over the long term. At the same time, they help to save water, detergent and energy: thanks to them, clothes of different colors can be washed together. There is no tedious sorting out of the laundry and the washing machine can always be full. That saves time and at the same time protects the environment.

Facts & figures on clothing consumption in Switzerland

Every Swiss person buys an average of 15 kg of new clothes a year. Around 40% of this, i.e. around 6 kg, is rarely or only rarely worn and is either passed on privately or ends up at Swiss used clothing collection points or in the rubbish bin. Very few people are aware that around 2,000 liters of water are required to make a single cotton T-shirt. For comparison: the water consumption for a fully loaded modern washing machine is now just 49 l per wash cycle.

6 tips for sustainable use of clothes

1. Less is more: only buy what you really need and if you do, then rely on classic basics and valuable textiles.

2. Wear your clothes longer, wash them less and if so, only at low temperatures.
Protect your clothes from yellowing and discoloration (e.g. with color and dirt towels).

3. Bring broken or mismatched clothes to the tailor's shop or lend a hand: fix them, style them or upcycle them.

 4. Buy dresses from thrift stores or swap sites and rent them for special occasions like weddings or birthdays. By the way, you can also do this online.

5. Don't throw away clothes with stains right away, treat them with appropriate stain removers.

6. If you buy new clothes, give preference to those made from natural fabrics (cotton, linen, hemp, wool) and from the fairest possible, regional and ecological production.
